Brighton Park at the Gonsenhauser Park
Brighton, NY

Given its proximity to the City of Rochester and high degree of development, the Town of Brighton contains few remaining parcels of undeveloped land.  Recognizing the tremendous value of its remaining open spaces, the town acquired 64 acres of the former Gonsenhauser Farm for parkland.  As the parkland is divided by the 590 expressway, it came to be known as two distinct pieces, the northern and southern parcels. Bayer Associates was hired to develop a program for the parkland that represented the needs of the many interest groups to the greatest extent possible. This programming work included a comprehensive study of the supply and demand of recreational facilities within the town, and also comparisons of the town's park system to national and state standards, and local models. Upon completion of the programming and analysis phase, Bayer Associates prepared a master plan for the development of the southern parcels.  As the southern parcels adjoined the town’s existing Meridian Centre Park, the community viewed the project as an expansion of the existing facilities.  A great deal of emphasis was placed on the careful integration of the new park features with those already in place to ensure continuity.  The new features will include a nature trail, a wetland boardwalk, a connection to the Erie Canal path, an open water marsh, a soccer field, and a baseball field.  The master plan was approved by the Town Board and the expansion project is underway.
