Peter Lyman Tennis Center
Rochester, NY

Following the development of plans for the North Athletic Field, Bayer Associates prepared a master plan for the Peter Lyman Tennis facility, to be located just south of the new field on the east side of Wilson Boulevard.  This facility was to include six tennis courts and an associated storage building.  Given the shortage of campus land available for recreation development, the University of Rochester selected this site for the tennis courts despite the spatial constraints created by the Mt. Hope Cemetery slope to the east, and the Wilson Boulevard embankment to the west.  A major issue that arose during the planning phase was accessibility of the North Athletic Field.  With the construction of six tennis courts between the North Athletic Field and the Hill Court parking lot, the accessibility of the field would be significantly compromised.  Bayer Associates’ plan incorporated a generous walkway to provide pedestrian access to the North Athletic Field.  The Peter Lyman Tennis Center is now open and being enjoyed by the entire university community.
