Wilson Boulevard Improvements
Rochester, NY

The Wilson Boulevard Improvements project followed the Intercampus Drive Improvements project as the second phase of a ten year effort to transform the vehicular and pedestrian circulation networks on the University of Rochester Campus, and open up the east bank of the Genesee River as a public park.  This work was part of a larger effort undertaken jointly with the City of Rochester and Monroe County to implement The Genesee River South Corridor Land Use and Development Plan.  The principle objectives of this project were to convert Wilson Boulevard from a major public thoroughfare to a minor campus road, to create a more accessible riverside landscape, and to create a more pedestrian oriented campus environment.  These objectives had been established in an earlier study prepared by Sasaki Associates, and they presented many design challenges.  The project master plan had to accommodate dramatically altered traffic patterns, furnish replacement parking, modify pedestrian networks, and provide a framework for the new riverside park.  The master plan also had to orchestrate each of these elements in a manner that was sensitive to the historic campus structure.  Mark Bayer served as the project landscape architect in the master planning and construction document phases of the project while employed by another consulting firm.
