Webster Arboretum
Webster, NY

With only a small portion of the 40 acre Webster Arboretum developed, the Webster Arboretum Association and the Town of Webster hired Bayer Associates to develop a master plan which would outline a strategy for phased development of the arboretum.  The Town desired a combination of both formal display gardens and informal naturalized areas, and several new arboretum features including a multipurpose building, expanded parking, expanded service facilities, and additional horticultural displays.  A major challenge of the project was to overcome the extreme linear nature of the arboretum and integrate the arboretum with the adjacent Irving Kent Park. The master plan developed by Bayer Associates addressed these issues by recommending a realignment of Irving Kent Park’s access road, which allowed for an easterly expansion of the perceived limits of the arboretum, and unimpeded pedestrian circulation between the park and arboretum.  The master plan also recommended enhancement of the stream course running through the arboretum, and utilization of water as a unifying design element.  The Master Plan was adopted by the Webster Arboretum Association and the Town of Webster and will serve to guide the development of this horticultural and recreational resource for many years to come.
