Infinity Quadrangle Improvements
Rochester, NY

In and effort to make this principal quadrangle at the Rochester Institute of Technology campus warmer, more welcoming, and more accommodating to pedestrian needs, Bayer Associates was hired by the Institute to develop alternative schematic plans for improvement of the quadrangle.  Serving as the western terminus of the main pedestrian corridor on campus, “the Quarter Mile”, the quadrangle features a prominent central sculpture and a diagonal network of asphalt pathways established by an original planting of London Plane Trees. The designers sought to develop a plan to improve the visual quality of the space and create a more pedestrian friendly atmosphere, while preserving the general layout and historic character of the quadrangle.  The final plan calls for the creation of new sitting areas and the replacement of the existing asphalt pavement with a decorative pattern of ornamental unit pavers which radiate from the sculpture and highlight sitting areas and building entries.  Upon completion of the schematic design phase, Bayer Associates developed construction documents for the project.  Proposed improvements were implemented in the summer of 2002.
